Smoked Turkey Chowder

Makes 6 Servings

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1/2 cup chopped onion
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 can (14-1/2 ounces) chicken broth
  • 1 cup half and half (2% milk may be substituted)
  • 1/2 pound cooked smoked turkey meat, cut into 1/2 inch pieces
  • 1/2 can (15 ounces each) Bartlett pear halves or slices, in juice
  • 1 can (8-3/4 ounces) whole kernel corn, drained
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme, crushed
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • METHOD

    In large saucepan, melt butter over medium-high heat; add onion and cook until tender, 4 to 6 minutes. Add flour; stir to coat onions. Add chicken broth and half and half; add all remaining ingredients. Bring mixture to a boil, stirring constantly; reduce heat and let simmer 5 minutes. Serve hot.
